Mac OS X 10.5 – Enable Bonjour Browser in ScreenSharing.app

I came across this today while browsing some plist files….
You can enable a “Bonjour Browser” which allows you to add list of computers you connect to via the new ScreenSharing application in Leopard. To enable this run the following command in your terminal:

defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing ShowBonjourBrowser_Debug 1

Now relaunch ScreenSharing.app and you’ll have a nice browser to select computers from. You can also add a computer to “My Computers” which leaves the connection in the list.

Note: to change the value back run the same command and replace the one with a zero.

iPhoto 6: Smart albums and fun with meta data

I posted a screenshot the other day on Flickr of my iPhoto6 layout and received some comments regarding the use of smart albums. When you import photographs into iPhoto you are also importing “MetaData”, or information about the photograph you took. Most cameras include information such as the date, time, shutter speed, aperture, ISO and whether or not the flash fired. In iPhoto6 you can now query against that meta data and build a smart album with the result. My library is composed of all smart albums (I primarily use keywords), and whenever I import images the albums are updated.

Most of these albums should be pretty self explanatory, here is an example of how we get there:

First create a “new smart album” (file -> new smart album)
Enter the title of the smart album as “Today Last Year”
Select “Match all of the following conditions”
Enter “Date – is in the last – 365 – days”
Click the plus sign to add a second field
Enter “Date – is not in the last – 364 – days”
This gives you an album of all the photos you took on this day last year.

You can also do this by week or month.

Flickr PhotoStreams to iPhoto PhotoCasts

Continuing on with my iPhoto6 screenshots….
I realized last night that by adding a Flickr photostream RSS feed as a photocast in the new iPhoto6 works!
It seems you can add any Flickr RSS feed and download the images directly into iPhoto… another great feature.

Server / Development Update

It’s been about a month since my last update to the FlickrSavr application and since I last posted. I’ve been working on cosmetic changes to Aloi.Org (including an upgrade to WP-2.0) and also changing hosting providers (due to speed). If you notice Aloi.Org is redirecting to ChrisAloi.com – It’s only temporary, once the DNS changes propagate all will be normal again. I’ve also started playing with Apple’s new iLife suite – iPhoto has really come along way, we now have the ability to subscribe to a “PhotoCast” or “Stream” – the PhotoCast allows subscriptons to Flickr streams which is really nice.

I’ve noticed some development in Flickr apps for the Mac OS as well – “Tickr” is a great Flickr Ticker that streams photos along your desktop.

I hope to have more updates to FlickrSavr in the near future, thanks again for all the support.
